Key to Managing Mold is Controlling Humidity

Wallingford, CT – September 25, 2011 – Recent heavy rainfall and flooding have left behind an unpleasant reminder in many American households: mold.  Connecticut Better Business Bureau cautions mold can cause persistent property and health problems if it is not brought under control.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Mold Guide, explains many types of mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet.  Mold can grow on wood, paper, carpet and food and has been tied to a number of health problems, in particular, respiratory difficulties.

Unchecked, mold will ultimately destroy substances it lands on, indicating the necessity of dealing with the problem quickly and properly.

Some consumers try to eradicate mold themselves while others prefer to call upon the expertise of a contractor.  BBB nationwide received nearly 30,000 inquiries about mold and mildew eradicators in 2010.

Better Business Bureau and the EPA advise homeowners to be proactive in dealing with mold and mildew.

Know your risks and side effects - There are many health risks associated with mold and mold growth.  Many people experience an allergic reactions and other respiratory complaints when mold is present in the home.  Avoid touching mold by wearing rubber gloves, and use a fan to ventilate the area, trying to avoid blowing the air into nearby rooms.

Be proactive - The EPA states that there is no practical way to eliminate all indoor mold and spores.  The way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.  If you notice a leak in your shower faucet or sink, repair it immediately to avoid creating a habitat for mold.  Clean and dry any wet or damp surfaces within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.  Vent all bathrooms, kitchens and other moisture-generating sources to reduce indoor humidity and prevent mold growth.

Choose wisely when picking a contractor - Some mold eradicators can be imposters.  It’s important to check a company’s BBB Business Review at www.bbb.org before selecting a contractor.  Ask for referrals from friends and family members and check with at least three contractors before deciding on one.
